Wheels! where can you get BBS centres?

The ex Jorg Obermoser toj sc 3.0litre sports restoration has car has slowed to a virtual standstill. We are trying to get the car as original, finished in the warsteiner colours. We have just found out after several weeks that wheel manufacturer BBS, no longer have, or make the wheel centres in the pattern that is desired. They don’t even have the original moulds. So, what is to happen now?

We are having to track down a pattern / mould maker to make a buck in the original style. we will then have to take this to a casting shop to get the centres cast in magnesium. All in all a very time consuming, project slowing hold up. At least we will be able to supply other people.

Where Do you get Historic Race Car Wheels?

That is the question on our lips at the moment, we want to keep the toj sportscar looking original and will be bringing it out in the original Warsteiner livery. The whole project looks like getting delayed because we can not fnd anyone to make the wheels! Any one got any suggestions?

Classic Endurance Racing returns to the UK, Silverstone – September 11th

The UK round of the very popular Classic Endurance Racing series comes to the popular Silverstone circuit. The entry is just over 50 cars and it is interesting to see that the Jean-Marc Luco has decided not torace his usual steed and is entered in what looks like a very nice Ligier JS3 DFV cosworth powered sports car. The grid is strongly supported from the usual entrants. The Wilkins Catlow Lola T296 is entered and hopefully they will be able to do the whole race this year. Last year John Sheldon rubbed his Chevron B16 against the Lola front wheel causing it to retire. The Wilkins team where not put off though! they drove down to Kent and Picked up Kevin Wilkins other car, The John Lepp Chevron B19. The Classic Endurance series is a support race for the Le Mans series 1000km of Silverstone

Another Toj sports car surfaces

It is good to see that another toj sports car sc30 has come out of someones garage. This car was advertised in Autosport and I think is in europe. These cars are going to need a lot of parts and patience to get them back to their former glory. From memory this car was the factory 3 litre toj. The new owner has a lot of work ahead of him / her / them. the car will be worth it though, it was a shame to see the Bmw powered sc202 get crashed at le mans classic. The good news is with the cars now becoming desireable those difficult to find parts should? become available

Ford Cosworth 3.0ltr DFV

The Toj is coming along nicely, the engine has now arrived. The engine for the car is a 3 litre Ford Cosworth DFV. The DFV was built by Geoff Richardson. The next task is the installation of the engine in the car, and the plumbing. No doubt we will be looking for parts that have got lost over the years. I am sure someone has a garage full of parts for this car, but it is knowing how to find these people.

Some say Dynos some say Dynamometers

I had an interesting conversation with Eddy Perk of PIPER Dynamometers, if you are trying to find someone who can build you what you want, he is definitely the man to talk to.

Piper Test and Measurement manufactures engine test systems incorporating its own range of dynamometer including Portable dynamometers, Hydraulic dynamometers, EC dynamometer, AC & DC dynamometer, and bespoke dynos for specialist industries, and now offer a unique container dynamometer:

Their instrumentation is comprehensive and ranges from simple analogue to full computer based data acquisition systems. The majority of the basic equipment can be specified to incorporate RS232/485 output signals.

Component test systems are designed in close co-operation with the customer. Our knowledge of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems enables value for money units to be manufactured at short lead times, whilst our close co-operation with engine manufacturers enables the most suitable test schedules to be prepared.

They have co-operation with proprietary peripheral instruments manufacturers of products such as smoke density recorders, gas analysers, fuel flow measuring devices and throttle actuators, enables PIPER to offer its customers essential test room equipment.

Technical back-up and assistance with peripheral services and, if required, liaison with subcontractors, ensures that customer experiences the minimum delay once the equipment is delivered on site.

PIPER dynamometer equipment is recommended and/or used by the majority of engine manufacturers, distributors and their dealers, including Cummins, Detroit Diesel, Komatsu, Perkins, Nissan and Yanmar and is suitable for other engine manufacturers.

The PIPER design philosophy is based on incorporating known technologies. This ensures that the client has reliable, serviceable and, above all, user friendly equipment.

Le Mans Classic 2010

The 2010 Le Mans Classic again proved to be a spectacular event with some of the finest cars from 1923 through to 1979. The Wilkins / Catlow Lola T296 ran well in the first race finishing 8th out of a grid of 69 cars, unfortunately in the night session the car suffered technical problems and was unable to complete the rest of the weekend.

The 1977 Porsche 936 driven by Jean-marc Luco and Jacques Nicolet proved to be all conquering as it did in period.

The Neil Primrose Lola T290 resplendant in the original Gitanes colours suffered from the mechanical gremlins. The car is powered by a David Gathercole FVC engine.

The Ian Giles Toj SC206 was unfortunately damaged in the night practice session, this was the cars first outing after its rebuild. Luckily Pilote Sam Wilson was able to walk away from the shunt with no injuries. Parts for Toj cars are difficult to get hold of, with a lot of the items needing specialist manufacture.

The Russel Buust / David Freeman Lloyds Chevron B31 was running well with its Le Mans bodywork on and was let down by electrical problems.

Ludovic Caron driving his Chevron B21 showed a clean pair of heals to cars that should have beaten it.

All in all a great weekend with very hot weather and a few cold beers. This bi-annual event is a must see for any petrol head
